Terms of reference An Bord Altranais Midwifery Committee

1. Provide advice and recommendations to the Education and Training Committee and to the Board with regard to issues concerning the education of midwives.

2. Consider any issues pertaining to the registration of midwives and scope of professional midwifery practice that are brought to the attention of the committee for consideration and which may require the Board to issue guidance to the profession.

3. Review and revise, on a three-five yearly basis, all An Bord Altranais publications pertaining to midwives and midwifery practice.

The committee shall be set up on the commencement of a Board’s term of office for the duration of that term of office.

Membership of the Midwifery Committee

  • Mrs Anne Carrigy (President of the Board)
  • Ms Pauline Treanor (Board Member representing midwives engaged in the administration of midwifery)
  • Ms Louise Gallagher (Board Member representing midwives engaged in midwifery education)
  • Ms Maureen Kington (Board Member representing midwives engaged in clinical practice in midwifery)
  • Ms Caitriona Molloy (Board Member representative of the interest of the general public)
  • Ms Sheila Sugrue (External representative from the Health Service Executive
  • Mr Declan Devane (External representative, third level educational institutions engaged in the education of midwives)
  • Ms Elke Hasner (External representative, independent domiciliary midwifery practice
  • Ms Margaret Philbin (External representative of the Irish Association of Directors of Nursing and Midwifery)

The chairperson of the committee shall be the President of the Board. The quorum for meetings of the committee shall be four. A minimum of two of these must be board members.
