Mrs Anne Carrigy, President of An Bord Altranais, in opening the conference stated that the conference “will give us an opportunity to reflect on our professional roles as nurses and examine ways of enhancing the nursing care of older people in all care settings.” She also explained that the Board’s newest publication provides guidance on nursing care of older people and direction to facilitate safe, competent and ethical nursing practice and quality patient care. “It will also serve and protect the public in detailing for them the nursing care they are entitled to and should expect to receive.”
Speakers presented papers on topics such as Stroke Care, Quality of Life and Elder Abuse. The presentations made by the conference speakers are available for download from the links below.
The day was brought to a close by the Minister of State, Mr. John Moloney, T.D., who officially launched the publication Professional Guidance for Nurses Working with Older People (An Bord Altranais, 2009). Mr. Moloney welcomed the guidance stating that “it will help nurses to ensure that older people will be looked after in a safe environment and keep both their identity and dignity”.
