Under the heading of Registration in the Act the Board is assigned or is enabled to carry out the following functions:

  • Establish and maintain a Register of Nurses;
  • Publish the Register of Nurses or any division or divisions thereof at such time and in such manner as the Minister for Health may direct;
  • Issue certificates of registration;
  • Register in the register every person who satisfies the Board that he complies with the prescribed conditions for registration;
  • Register every person whose name is entered on the Register of Nurses maintained by the former Board under the Nurses Act, 1950;
  • Refuse to register the name of any person who is otherwise entitled to be registered on the grounds of the unfitness of that person to engage in the practice of nursing. Such a decision of the Board may be appealed by the person concerned to the High Court;
  • Take such steps as it considers necessary from time to time to time to ensure the accuracy of the Register of Nurses;
  • With the consent of the Minister for Health register in a register maintained for that purpose the names of persons who are engaged in a profession or calling which is ancillary to nursing.
