About An Bord Altranais

An Bord Altranais is the statutory body responsible for the regulation of nursing and midwifery in Ireland. The primary purpose of regulation is the protection of the public by ensuring high standards of education and practice. The general concern of An Bord Altranais is the promotion of high standards of education, training and professional conduct among nurses and midwives.

An Bord Altranais, mindful of its regulatory authority to promote high standards of professional education and training and professional conduct among nurses and midwives, and of its mission to protect the public through these functions, would like to advise you of the following information for candidates educated in Ireland and seeking registration with An Bord Altranais.

The responsibilities and functions of An Bord Altranais are defined by the provisions of the Nurses Act, 1985. Part IV of the Nurses Act, 1985 requires the Board to make rules in respect of the education and training of nurses being prepared for Registration. The Board has developed Requirements and Standards for Nurse Registration Education Programmes (1999, 2000, 2004, and 2005). These documents set out the requirements and standards of An Bord Altranais as the regulatory body for the education and training of nurses and midwives in Ireland. The thirteen Higher Education Institutions and their partner Health Care Institutions must comply with these requirements and standards. This compliance is monitored by An Bord Altranais through an approval and monitoring process which includes a review of a self assessment audit of compliance with the standards and requirements completed by the Higher Education and the Health Care Institution partnership. The process also includes an approval and validation of the curriculum and a full audit of the programme at least once every five years. Student nurses and midwives must satisfactorily complete all the statutory and EU requirements of an approved programme to be eligible to apply for registration as a nurse with An Bord Altranais.

 Approximately 82,576 nurses and midwives are registered with An Bord Altranais. Registration with An Bord Altranais is mandatory in order to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife in Ireland. Registration assures the public, employers and colleagues that you are accountable to the Board for meeting and maintaining the competencies and standards of the profession.
