There are ten parts to the Register maintained by An Bord Altranais. Five programmes are at pre-registration level:


Pre-Registration Honours Degree Programmes:

  • Children's & General Nursing (integrated) 4.5 Years
  • Registered Children's Nurses (RCN) & Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • General Nursing 4 Years Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Intellectual Disability Nursing 4 Years Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (RNID)
  • Midwifery 4 Years Registered Midwifery (RM)
  • Psychiatric Nursing 4 Years Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN)

Site Visit Process

On site visits are required as a component of determining the suitability of third level institutions and health care institutions in respect of educational programmes leading to registration, as outlined in Requirements and Standards for Nurse Registration Education Programmes (An Bord Altranais, February 2005) and Requirements and Standards for the Midwifery Registration Education Programme (An Bord Altranais, December 2005).

Annual Report to An Bord Altranais

- (To be submitted by HEI's and Health Care Institutions, Partners to An Bord Altranais annually in February).

An Bord Altranais requires the third level institution/health care institution(s) to produce an annual report. The annual report will be submitted in February of each year and will be produced jointly by the third level institution/health care institution(s).

A downloadable copy of the Proforma, one for nursing and one for midwifery, which is to be submitted to An Bord Altranais is attached below.

Nurses and Midwives Act, 2011 signed into legislation
2/3/2012 - An Bord Altranais is pleased to advise that the Nurses and Midwives Act, 2011, was signed into legislation on 21st December, 2011.
Student Nurse and Midwife Payment
2/1/2012 - The Department of Health has reviewed the decision to phase out the payment for the mandatory 36 week rostered clinical placement that occurs in the fourth year of the pre-registration nurse and midwife education programme.
