Scope of Practice

This programme was designed to assist all registered nurses and midwives develop their personal understanding of the enabling and flexible Scope of Practice Framework produced by An Bord Altranais in 2000. This programme covers the Scope of Practice Framework and how it applies to your day-to-day work.

The interactive scenarios cover many scope of practice situations along with guidance on how to work through key decisions.


The aims of the programme are to:

  • Promote continuous professional autonomous decision-making among nurses and midwives
  • Empower nurses and midwives self-reliance in the area of determining their own scope of practice
  • Encourage independent critical thinking among nurses and midwives
  • Assist nurses and midwives overcome barriers and obstacles to the use of the scope of practice framework as experienced by practitioners.

Celebrate Nurses Week 2014
9/10/2014 - Plans are underway at NMBI for our second Nurses Week which will take place from October 6-10 2014. In a survey we conducted last year on the public’s knowledge of nursing, we asked them how important certain attributes were to the nursing profession. The results showed that maintaining patient safety, acting in a professional manner, taking responsibility for the care provided and retaining patient confidentiality were considered the most important attributes. Building on the survey’s findings, the theme for Nurses Week this year is Professionalism in Nursing: What the Public Expects.
