Scope of Practice

This programme was designed to assist all registered nurses and midwives develop their personal understanding of the enabling and flexible Scope of Practice Framework produced by An Bord Altranais in 2000. This programme covers the Scope of Practice Framework and how it applies to your day-to-day work.

The interactive scenarios cover many scope of practice situations along with guidance on how to work through key decisions.


The aims of the programme are to:

  • Promote continuous professional autonomous decision-making among nurses and midwives
  • Empower nurses and midwives self-reliance in the area of determining their own scope of practice
  • Encourage independent critical thinking among nurses and midwives
  • Assist nurses and midwives overcome barriers and obstacles to the use of the scope of practice framework as experienced by practitioners.

9/24/2014 - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Fitness to Practise Hearings will commence in public this autumn for the first time in the history of the nursing and midwifery professions. The first hearing will be heard on September 29th and 30th next at the headquarters of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) in Blackrock, Co Dublin.
Notice of Fitness to Practice Inquiry
9/23/2014 - There will be a Fitness to Practise Inquiry commencing at 10 a.m. on Monday, 29th September 2014 and continuing on Tuesday, 30th September 2014. The public are invited to attend. Admittance to the Inquiry venue will be from 9.15 a.m.
