Scope of Practice

This programme is designed to assist all registered nurses and midwives develop their understanding of NMBI’s flexible Scope of Practice Framework. This programme covers the Scope of Practice Framework and how it applies to your day-to-day work.

The interactive scenarios cover many scope of practice situations along with guidance on how to work through key decisions.


The aims of the programme are to:

  • Promote continuous professional autonomous decision-making among nurses and midwives
  • Empower nurses and midwives self-reliance in the area of determining their own scope of practice
  • Encourage independent critical thinking among nurses and midwives
  • Assist nurses and midwives overcome barriers and obstacles to the use of the scope of practice framework as experienced by practitioners.

Fitness to Practise Inquiry Notice
11/26/2014 - Wednesday 26 November 2014: A Fitness to Practise Inquiry will be held on Tuesday, 2nd December 2014 commencing at 10 am and will continue on Wednesday, 3rd December 2014. Admittance to the Inquiry venue at the NMBI offices in Blackrock will be from 9.15 am.
NMBI response to unions regarding direct debits
11/21/2014 - On 21 November 2014, NMBI CEO Dr Maura Pidgeon sent response letters to the heads of the three unions representing nurses and midwives regarding registrant direct debit payments.
