Approximately 82,576 nurses and midwives are registered with An Bord Altranais, over 65,415 of whom are listed on the active register and the remainder being listed on the inactive register.

Registration with An Bord Altranais is mandatory in order to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife in Ireland. Registration assures the public, employers and colleagues that you are accountable to the Board for meeting and maintaining the competencies and standards of the profession.

The main function of the Registration Section of An Bord Altranais is to maintain the Register of Nurses in accordance with both Part IV of the Nurses Act, 1985 and in accordance with the Nurses Rules, as appropriate.
